Bringing your Greyhound home

You've done your research, decided a Greyhound was for you, your application has
been approved, and now it is time for your Greyhound to come home to you!
Here are a few items that you will need to have on hand for your new companion.

  • Couple of free days- It is always nice to plan on having some free time to spend bonding with your Greyhound and to teach him or her the ropes of their new home when they first arrive.
  • I.D. tag- Your new Greyhound will come with a N.C.G.C. tag but adding one of your own with their name & your phone numbers is a good idea.
  • Big soft bed- Greyhounds need a nice, cushy place to lie.  There are wonderful dog beds out there or  you can use a fluffy comforter or big blankets piled.
  • Squeaky plush toys-  a Greyhound favorite!
  • Water  & Food  dishes-  We recommend stainless steel, easy to wash and to keep germ free.
  • Baby gates- though optional, these are a good idea to have around until your new Greyhound gets used to all the rules of the household.
  • Crate- also optional. Should you decide to crate, it should be approx. 36" high X 28" wide X 48" deep.
  • Fenced yard- Highly recommended for your and the Greyhounds pleasure!  Please be sure to purchase padlocks for your gate so workmen or a passerby cannot leave your gate ajar.
  • High quality food- ask us about Canidae and Natural Balance.
  • Martingale collar with leash These will come with your N.C.G.C. Greyhound but it's always nice to have extras.  Check our links for some greyt places to shop.
  • Squawker- an optional, though valuable tool should your Greyhound ever get loose.  Trainers use these at the kennels during training, the sound they make is associated with treats and fun.  It's a greyt way to call your Greyhound back to you.
  • Nail trimmers or Dremel tool- It is important to keep your Greyhound's nails trimmed.  You can also take them to a groomer, or perhaps your vet, to have this done.
  • Muzzle- This item will also come with your N.C.G.C. Greyhound.  A muzzle comes in handy when you come to N.C.G.C. events where there is a Fun Run set up or should you choose to lure course with your new companion.
  • Hound Glove- Greyhounds are minimal shedders, grooming with a hound glove every so often will help keep your Greyhounds coat nice.
  • First Aid Kit- Items recommended:  Vet wrap, gauze roll, gauze pads, scissors, tweezers, adhesive tape, Immodium AD, triple antibiotic ointment, saline solution, betadine, small book on canine first aid along with your vet's day time and emergency numbers.
